We are seeking highly skilled Environmental Manager to join our team and help us to deliver a sustainable operation.

As an Environmental Manager you will report to the HSEQ Director. Your key driver is to  support the various sections of our business to ensure 14001 compliance, you will also feed into our established ESG team. You will coordinate regional activities and implement our sustainability strategy. Your expertise will drive internal continuous improvement. You will support project teams, client tendering , upskilling and our progress towards  sustainability targets whilst you oversee the execution of environmental compliance to ISO14001. You will be the go-to resource for specialist environmental sustainability advice when needed and will have a strong relationship within the operational business.

Please note nationwide travel will be involved in this role.

Key responsibilities as Environmental Manager include:
 
  • Demonstrate a proven track record of delivering environmental improvements within the sector and across associated trades.
  • Possess advanced knowledge of ISO14001 compliance and assurance, along with key environmental aspects.
  • Lead management reviews, and ensure associated procedures and plans are continually improved.
  • Adhere to industry standards, company procedures, and legal requirements.
  • Communicate identified opportunities and threats to team and relevant projects.
  • Understand sector-specific reporting standards and key performance indicators.
  • A good knowledge and preferably experience of environmental certification/assessment tools (e.g., BREEAM, LEED).
  • Translate complex technical information into clear direction for operational teams.
  • Conduct awareness and training sessions across the value chain.
  • Attend key operational meetings as required by the SMT.
  • Undertake regular data reviews to identify trends and improvement opportunities both at site and regional level.
  • Develop, lead and maintain site?specific Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs) for HV underground and substation projects, ensuring alignment with ESB’s employer/contractor requirements.
  • Undertake environmental risk assessments (design stage through to construction) for large?scale underground HV transmission/utility works (e.g., tunnels, trenches, cable ducts, associated substations).
  • Ensure full compliance with Irish environmental legislation, relevant EU directives/regulations, planning consents and ESB’s internal environmental policy and EMS. For example, the contractor documentation for ESB requires full compliance with “all applicable Irish legislation (in addition to the relevant European legislation)” in relation to the environment.
  • Manage and coordinate environmental aspects of permitting and consenting including EIA, AA (Appropriate Assessment under the Habitats Directive), EIS/ EIAR, discharge consents, waste licensing, water quality, etc. For example, ESB already screens for AA under Regulation?42(7) of the Habitats Regulations.
  • Monitor contractor and subcontractor performance: inspect site operations, audit CEMP implementation, identify non?conformances, initiate corrective actions and report to senior management.
  • Provide environmental guidance to design and project teams (construction methodology, route selection for underground works, ecological/biodiversity constraints, ground contamination, spoil management, trenchless works, HDD, etc.).
  • Engage with statutory and regulatory bodies (Environmental?Protection?Agency – EPA, National?Parks?&?Wildlife?Service – NPWS, Inland?Fisheries?Ireland – IFI, local authorities) and help manage any environmental correspondence, notifications, non?compliances and audits.
  • Lead environmental training and awareness initiatives for project teams, contractors and stakeholders (including environmental induction, toolbox talks, monitoring records, incident reporting).
  • Manage environmental data and documentation: CEMP registers, incident logs, monitoring results (noise, air, water, vibrations), waste tracking, construction and demolition waste compliance under Irish waste regulations.
  • Promote sustainability and biodiversity enhancement opportunities: waste minimisation, circular economy, resource efficiency, low?impact construction methods, rehabilitation of site works.
  • Participate in procurement and contract specification: ensuring environmental obligations are embedded in tender documents, employer/contractor requirements, and that contractors comply with ESB’s environmental standards (e.g., ISO 14001, environmental policy).
  • Provide input into project cost control, reporting and commercial decisions from an environmental risk viewpoint (e.g., spoil disposal cost, contaminated land, mitigation costs).
  • Monitor productivity and deadlines and ensure tasks add value.
  • Hold full membership and/or chartership with a relevant professional institution.
  • Driving continuous improvement and implementing initiatives to promote best practice at all times.


Required Qualifications & Experience
Education & Professional Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a good depth and breadth of relevant experience and be willing to travel nationwide as part of their role. Your expertise will drive our internal continual improvement, support work winning and oversee and execute compliance to ISO14001.


 
  • Bachelor’s degree (Level?8) or higher in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Ecology, or a related discipline.
  • Membership of a recognised professional body (e.g., IEMA Ireland, IEI, Chartered Environmentalist status desirable or working towards).
  • Relevant health & safety awareness/training appropriate to construction environment (desirable).
  • Proven track record of supporting environmental and sustainability performance on projects.
  • Ability to travel nationwide.
  • Detailed knowledge of national and EU Environmental legislation and policy.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Management Systems.
  • Excellent communication skills.
